Since its launch in November 2022, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been making waves, with many calling it “the Google killer!”

A versatile AI-generated content creator that can make life easier is certainly a thing of beauty. According to Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, ChatGPT reached 1 million users in just 5 days of its launch. Moreover, Microsoft announced a multi-billion-dollar partnership with OpenAI to augment AI capabilities.

As soon as ChatGPT grew to prominence, Google went into a panic mode. The founder of Gmail, Paul Buchheit, wanted Google to come up with a ChatGPT alternative. Otherwise, he was of the opinion that Google would cease to exist by the end of two years.

Google had been dominating the internet search domain for over two decades. It occupied around 90% of the search engine space, with 99,000 searches taking place every second. The existential threat posed by ChatGPT made many question whether it was the beginning of Google’s end.

Nonetheless, on 8th February, Google shut down these doubts when it announced a ChatGPT competitor, Google Bard, which was then in its beta testing phase.

What’s more is that if Microsoft’s agreement with OpenAI went through, the former would hold a 49% stake in the latter and claim 75% of its profits. This meant that it would no longer simply be ChatGPT vs Bard, but Google vs Microsoft.

Irrespective of that, both companies have been in a race to advance their individual tools with the latest technology, showing the potential to dominate this evolving market.

In addition, we cannot ignore China. The country was described as dominating a significant portion of the global AI market, and it had already announced its own ChatGPT alternative called Ernie, which was also undergoing testing. This indicated that the competition between ChatGPT and Bard had the potential to become part of a broader US-China technology rivalry.

At the time, ChatGPT was giving Google sleepless nights because a significant portion of Google’s revenue came from search engine advertising. So the question remained: who would win this historic tech war?

1. Understanding ChatGPT vs Bard Technology

Before getting into ChatGPT vs Bard, let’s understand the basics of the technology behind these tools.

What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT, or Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, is a generative language model based on pre-training and Transformer architecture.

Basically, an AI-powered search engine is a system that learns our language and caters to us in the same language. Large AI systems are trained with open data available on the internet. When this is done on a massive scale and the technology is trained to respond to different parameters, a large language model is created.

It is only after this training that the model becomes ready to respond to users in natural language. The article states that ChatGPT had been trained with 1.75 billion parameters.

ChatGPT’s Generative Capability

ChatGPT’s generative capability allows the tool to generate a variety of content, including:

  • Written code
  • Product descriptions
  • Blog posts
  • Email drafts
  • Summaries of transcripts, meetings, and podcasts
  • Simple explanations of complex topics
  • Law briefs
  • Translations
  • Poems
  • Jokes or memes
  • Social media posts

It equips the tool with the capability to understand and explain concepts.

In computing terms, generative technology can utilise the combined potential of humans and machines, something that was previously considered difficult to achieve.

Understanding Transformer Architecture

ChatGPT is also equipped with Transformer architecture.

It is a type of neural network that includes self-attention layers, which help a language model understand the importance of different words and phrases in a given command.

With this technology, the model understands the meaning and context of the input and responds accordingly.

What Is Pre-training?

Pre-training is when the technology is trained to predict the next word in a sequence of words.

At a mass level, text is fed into the system and, using different methods, it is trained to predict what comes next. The article states that ChatGPT had been fed with around 300 billion words from various sources.

A new input is stored in the system as additional data and patterns. With every new input, the knowledge bank grows, increasing its efficiency.

ChatGPT and GPT-3

ChatGPT is based on the GPT-3 language model, which is built using the Transformer architecture.

Interestingly, Google created and open-sourced the Transformer architecture in 2017.

Nevertheless, both ChatGPT and Bard are based on these technologies, with differences between them. Bard was expected to have an advantage through Google’s massive dataset. Even though training such a tool would take time, Microsoft’s ChatGPT had already overcome this challenge.

2. Microsoft, ChatGPT and Bing vs Google Bard

The merging of Microsoft, ChatGPT, and Bing put Google on alert mode.

The reaction was the announcement of Bard by CEO Sundar Pichai. For years, Google had been consistently working toward becoming an AI-focused company.

The company had worked on advanced generative AI and large language models that were attracting significant attention. In addition, Google had been consistently improving its search engine using AI.

The fact that Google announced its ChatGPT competitor, Bard, even before it was completely ready demonstrated how quickly the world was moving toward disruptive AI technology.

Google had also been running large-scale programmes to integrate AI with its existing products.

Two years earlier, Google had launched the next-generation Language and Conversation Capabilities Model powered by Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA).

LaMDA was perceived as capable of producing highly realistic conversational responses. Based on the same LaMDA technology, Google was working on an experimental conversational AI service.

Google Bard was that Google AI tool.

Bard’s large knowledge reservoir could connect with the power, creativity, and intelligence of large language models to answer complex questions in fresh, customised, and high-quality language.

3. Google Bard AI vs ChatGPT

Bard looks similar to a search engine, but the communication feels more human.

Unlike Google Assistant and Siri, Bard is an AI-supported Natural Language Processing software. One of its major advantages is that AI can deepen our understanding of information and convert it into useful knowledge.

AI technology is knowledge-based as opposed to information-based.

An efficient knowledge production system that goes beyond objective information can improve our efficiency significantly.

For example, if you ask Google about the difference between Palak Paneer and Pasta, it can easily provide an answer.

But if you ask “How to make Pasta taste delicious?”, Google can provide numerous websites for you to choose from.

When it comes to getting deeper insights into something or finding something particularly relevant, it can take more time to find the right information through traditional search.

AI-powered chatbots aim to save this time and energy. They understand the question and provide an answer that can be both precise and comprehensive.

Users can also ask a follow-up question without switching to another website or webpage.

It is almost like having a personal trainer for information.

4. Conclusion

No matter which tool wins, the race has already begun.

There are plenty of competitors, and whoever provides the services users find most useful will play a significant role in shaping this new world of AI.

However, there are also immediate concerns, including the potential impact on human learning patterns and labour markets. These remain predictions, and the long-term effects are difficult to determine.

AI could affect our cognitive skills, but it could also establish simpler ways of completing tasks.

For example, calculators have increased productivity without completely eliminating our ability to perform manual mathematical calculations. That is what we might expect from AI as well.

This technology needs to be regulated in its early stages. Countries may have to implement regulations around its use, even though doing so could be difficult.

After all, the usefulness of this technology is, to a large extent, in our hands.

The crux of the matter is that, whether we like it or not, we may not be able to avoid the impact of AI.
